Jail & detention facility notary
Notarizations inside San Diego County detention facilities, with the access procedures and identification rules each one requires handled properly the first time.

Notarizing inside a detention facility is a different job from a normal signing. Access is controlled, what you may bring in is restricted, the inmate's ID is held by the facility, and every location runs its own procedure. We do these regularly across San Diego County and we know how each facility works – which saves you the wasted trips that families and attorneys often make on their own.
Facilities we serve
- San Diego Central Jail, downtown
- George F. Bailey Detention Facility, Otay Mesa
- Vista Detention Facility
- East Mesa Reentry Facility
- Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, Santee
- South Bay Detention Facility, Chula Vista
- Federal and other facilities in the region, subject to their own rules – ask us
Documents we are usually asked for
- Powers of attorney so someone outside can manage property, vehicles, banking or benefits
- Vehicle titles and DMV transfers
- Property deeds and sale documents
- Child custody, guardianship and family law paperwork
- Affidavits and declarations for court
- Insurance claims, settlement and release forms
- Wills and estate documents
How it works
- Call us with the details – which facility, the inmate's full legal name and booking number, and what needs signing.
- We confirm the route in. Some facilities take a professional visit on request; others require a scheduled appointment, attorney sponsorship or advance clearance. We will tell you which applies and what the realistic timeline is.
- You get the document to us, complete and ready. Email is usually easiest and we print it.
- We attend and notarize, then return the executed document to you or to the attorney, by hand or post.
Identification inside a facility. Inmates rarely have their own photo ID on them, since property is held on booking. Depending on the facility, identification may be possible through facility records and staff confirmation, or may require two credible identifying witnesses. This is the single most common reason a jail notarization fails, so we check it before we drive out rather than after.
Timing and cost
Facility scheduling, not us, drives the timeline. Some visits can happen within a day or two; others take longer to clear. The notarization itself is the standard rate – $95 for the visit, including travel and up to three signatures – but long waits inside and distant facilities may carry an agreed additional fee, which we will quote before you commit to anything.
We handle these documents with the discretion they deserve. Nothing about a signing is discussed with anyone other than you and the person who instructed us.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone arrange a jail notarization, or only an attorney?
Family members can arrange it in most cases, though some facilities and some visit types are easier to clear with attorney sponsorship. Call us with the facility name and we will tell you the realistic route and timeline before you pay anything.
What identification is used if the inmate's ID is held by the facility?
It depends on the facility. Some permit identification through their own records with staff confirmation; others require two credible identifying witnesses who personally know the signer. We confirm which applies to your facility in advance, because getting this wrong is the usual reason a visit is wasted.
How soon can you go?
That is controlled by the facility's scheduling, not by us. Some visits clear in a day or two, others take longer. We will give you an honest estimate once you tell us where and who.
How do I get the document to you?
Email is usually simplest and we print it. The document must be complete, with no blanks for the signer to fill in later. If you are not sure the document is the right one, send it over and we will look before the visit.
Is it confidential?
Yes. We discuss the signing only with you or the attorney instructing us. We keep the journal record California requires of every notary, and nothing beyond that.
